Generic name: Mesalamine, Mesacol, Mesacol OD
Use: Ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis.
Asacol is a drug available to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis and proctosigmoiditis. It also stops the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. The active ingredient mesalamine works by affecting the substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage and diarhhea which are common symptoms of these conditions. Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. Proctitis and proctosigmoiditis are conditions causing inflammation of the rectum. It is effective in reducing inflammation caused by these conditions. We currently have brand, Procter & Gamble Asacol, Asacol suppositories (250mg, 500mg) and generic Mesalamine in stock, the dose range of 400 mg to 1200 mg.
Asacol Side Effects
The possible common Asacol side effects are:
• Fever, sore throat,other flu symptoms;
• Headache, dizziness, fatigue;
• Mild nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, constipation, diarrhea, gas;
• Skin rash.
More serious side effects may include severe stomach pain, cramping, fever, or bloody diarrhea.
Asacol Safety in Pregnancy and Children
Before buying Asacol, tell your doctor if you have one of the following medical conditions:
• A heart condition;
• A history of allergy to sulfasalazine (Azulfidine);
• Liver or kidney disease.
• Pyloric stenosis (a stomach condition).
Asacol is in pregnancy category C (studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus). You should inform your doctor if you are planning to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding. Asacol passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. The dose or use of Asacol in children must be determined by your doctor.
