Product Details

Fibristal (Ulipristal acetate) is a medication known as a selective progesterone receptor modulator (SPRMs). It is prescribed as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy, as well as to treat uterine fibroids. It works by controlling heavy uterine bleeding, shrinking fibroid volume, reducing pelvic pain, stopping or delaying egg release, and even making it harder for an egg to attach to the uterus.

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, stomach pain, or menstrual pain.

The serious side effects may include:

• Severe pain in your lower stomach (especially on one side)
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

You should not use Fibristal if you are allergic to ulipristal, or if you are already confirmed to be pregnant. You should also not use this medication if you have not yet started menstruating or if you are past menopause.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

This medication should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing, as it can harm an unborn or breastfeeding infant. Do not use this medication if you have already been confirmed pregnant or if you think you might be pregnant.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as directed.

For the use of emergency contraceptive: Fibristal is usually given as soon as possible after unprotected sex or failed birth control method (such as a broken condom). This medicine can be used at any time during your menstrual cycle but must be taken within 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex.

For the use of uterine fibroids: Fibristal is given in a treatment course of three months, followed by two menstrual cycles without treatment. Continued intermittent courses are repeated as necessary. Pregnancy should be avoided during this time.

This tablet can be taken with or without food.

Store Fibristal in its original container at room temperature – away from heat, moisture, and light.

If vomiting occurs within the first 3 hours of taking Fibristal, it may not be as effective. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you should repeat your dose.

There may be an interaction between Fibristal and other medications such as birth control pills, bosentan, griseofulvin, St. John’s Wort, rifampin, topiramate, barbituates, or seizure medications, etc. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Fibristal.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Have had an ectopic pregnancy
• If your last period was more than 4 weeks ago

This medication is not approved for anyone younger than 18 years old.

Questions and Answers

1. It has been a week and a half since I had unprotected sex. Can I still take Fibristal to avoid pregnancy?
Answer: Fibristal should only be taken as an emergency contraceptive within 5 days after unprotected sex. Talk to your doctor about the best way to handle things in your situation.

2. Can I get pregnant after my three-month treatment of Fibristal?
Answer: Talk to your doctor about how long you should wait after your treatment course of Fibristal for uterine fibroids before getting pregnant. While you can get pregnant right away, some of the medicine could still be in your system.

3. I threw up an hour after taking Fibristal. What should I do?
Answer: If you were sick within 3 hours of taking this medication, it is possible that your doctor will want you to repeat the dosage when being used as an emergency contraceptive. Talk to your doctor about your options.
