Dosage

Mirena is an intra-uterine device, or IUD contains 52 mg of levonorgestrel.

Usage

Mirena (Levonorgestrel) is a prescription medication that is used to treat birth control. Unlike birth control pills, it is a plastic device that is inserted into the uterus and sits there where it releases the female hormone levonorgestrel. It causes the mucus in the cervix to thicken and the wall lining in the womb too thin to reduce the chances of pregnancy. Mirena is usually prescribed to women who have already had a child and who have heavy periods. Mirena device can help to avoid pregnancy for as long as five years or until it is removed and so it is a long-lasting form of birth control that doesn’t carry the risk of forgetting to take the birth control medication. Mirena must be inserted by a medical professional to avoid accidents such as cervical or uterine tearing and pain from a dislodged device.

Side Effects

The possible Mirena side effects include:
• Breakthrough bleeding, or heavier menstrual bleeding during the first few weeks after device insertion;
• Breast tenderness or pain, back pain;
• Headache, nervousness, mild dizziness;
• Irregular menstrual periods, changes in bleeding patterns or flow;
• Mild itching, skin rash;
• Mood changes, loss of interest in sex;
• Nausea, vomiting, bloating;
• Weight gain, acne, changes in hair growth;

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience the following serious side effects:
• Extreme dizziness, feeling like you might pass out;
• Fever, chills, or other signs of infection;
• Heavy or ongoing vaginal bleeding, vaginal sores, vaginal discharge that is watery, foul-smelling discharge, or otherwise unusual;
