Product Details
Niaspan (Niacin) is used to treat high cholesterol. It is also used to lower the risk of heart attack in people with high cholesterol who have already had a heart attack. It is sometimes used to treat coronary artery disease. Niacin extended release belongs to the family of medications known as lipid metabolism regulators. This medication helps to raise good cholesterol and lower the bad cholesterol when diet and exercise are not enough. Niaspan should be combined with an appropriate diet and exercise program to reduce cholesterol. It is not a substitute for healthy eating and exercise.

The common side effects may include diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, nausea, stomach upset, and vomiting. The serious side effects may include:
• Fast, pounding, or uneven heart beats;
• Feeling faint, fainting, shortness of breath;
• Flu symptoms with dark colored urine;
• Jaundice;
• Muscle pain, leg cramps;
• Swelling, tenderness, or weakness

You should not take Niaspan ER if you are allergic to Niacin, if you have severe liver disease, a stomach ulcer, or active bleeding. Before you start taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal conditions. Avoid drinking hot beverages shortly after taking Niaspan ER. Hot drinks can worsen the flushing effect. You should also avoid alcohol; it may increase our risk of liver damage, and can also worsen the flushing effects of this medication. This medication may make you dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Niaspan maybe harmful to an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Niacin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not use this medication without informing your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

1. What is the usual recommended starting dose of niacin extended release tablets?
Answer: The recommended starting dose is 500mg at bedtime after a low-fat snack. The dose is gradually increased every 4 weeks to a maximum dose of 2000 mg at bedtime.

2. Does Niaspan affect my blood sugar level?
Answer: This medication may make your blood sugar level to rise, which can cause or worsen diabetes. You should inform your doctor if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination. If you already have diabetes, check your blood sugars regularly.
