Usage

Optivar (Azelastine) is a prescription medicine used to relieve eye itching and red eyes caused by allergic reactions such as allergic conjunctivitis. The active ingredient in Optivar eye drops is Azelastine. Azelastine belongs to a class of medications known as antihistamines (ophthalmic). It works by blocking certain chemicals called histamines, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

The common side effects of Optivar are bitter taste in your mouth, difficulty with breathing, fatigue, pruritus, temporary blurring, eye pain, headache, and transient burning/stinging sensation.

Stop using Optivar and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe eye pain;
• Severe burning, stinging, itching, or eye redness after using this medication;
• Signs of allergic reaction such as fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms;
• Trouble breathing;
• Trouble seeing clearly or worsening of eye condition

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Optivar eye drops, inform your doctor if you've used it before, are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Do not use eye drops while you are wearing soft contact lenses. Allow these eye drops to stay for at least 10 minutes before inserting your contact lenses. It should not be used to treat minor contact lens irritation. Wash your hands before handling the eye medication. You should use this medication precisely as directed by your doctor. To apply the eye drops: Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze a drop into this pocket. Close your eyes for 1 or 2 minutes. Avoid touching the tip of the eye dropper or place it directly on your eye. A contaminated dropper can infect your eye, leading to serious vision problems. Do not attempt to increase your dose or the number of drops you applied to your eyes, or use this drug longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. Tell your doctor if you do not get better or get worse.

Before you start using Optivar, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergic to Azelastine (the active ingredient in Optivar eye drops);
• A child younger than 3 years old;
• Eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataract;
• Eye irritation due to contact lenses or you wear contact lenses;
• Breastfeeding a child;
• Pregnancy

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant while using Optivar eye drops for your eye conditions. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when prescribed. It would be best if you had a conversation with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Optivar and other drugs such as olanzapine, clozapine, alcohol, Sleep pills such as triazolam, zaleplon, carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine, metaxalone, and medications for pain (narcotics) such as acetaminophen, opioids.
