Paraplatin Information

Product Details

Paraplatin (Carboplatin) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows down the spread throughout the body. It can be used together with other cancer medications and chemotherapy to treat ovarian cancer.

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, temporary hair loss, pain, swelling, or redness where medication was injected.

The serious side effects may include:

• Body aches
• Chills
• Clay colored stools
• Dark urine
• Easy bruising
• Fever
• Hearing or vision problems
• Jaundice
• Lightheadedness
• Low magnesium levels
• Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
• Pale skin
• Severe, ongoing vomiting
• Shortness of breath
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Skin changes at injection site
• Stomach pain
• Rapid heart rate
• Trouble concentrating
• Unusual bleeding

You should not use Paraplatin if you are allergic to Carboplatin or similar medications, such as oxaliplatin, or cisplatin, or if you have severe bleeding or bone marrow suppression.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

Do not use this medication if you are nursing or pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or nursing.

Paraplatin is injected into the vein through an IV and it is typically administered in a clinic or hospital setting, once every four weeks.

There may be an interaction between Paraplatin and other medications, including antivirals, chemotherapy, injected antibiotics, medicine for bowel disorders, medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection, and some pain or arthritis medicines (including aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve). Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Paraplatin.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• If you’ve ever received carboplatin in the past
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Weak immune system

1. What should my caregiver know about Paraplatin?
Answer: Paraplatin can pass into body fluids (urine, feces, vomit, semen, etc.) for at least 48 hours after receiving a dose. Caregivers should wear rubber gloves whiles cleaning anything that may have been contaminated by bodily fluids. Wash hands before and after putting on rubber gloves and wash all laundry separate from others.

2. Can I take Paraplatin while pregnant?
Answer: No, you will want to avoid taking this medication while pregnant, as it can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. Be sure to use proper precaution to avoid pregnancy and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while on this medication.

3. Can I get infections more easily while taking Paraplatin?
Answer: Yes, Paraplatin can lower your blood cells that help you fight infections and help your blood to clot. This makes it easier to get a new infection or bleed more easily. Avoid being around others who have active infections and take care not to get cut.
