Usage

Santyl ointment (Collagenase) is a topical prescription medication used to treat severe burns or skin ulcers like pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers in adults. Collagenase Santyl Ointment removes damaged tissue from chronic skin ulcers and severely burned areas. The active ingredient in Santyl ointment is Collagenase. Collagenase is an enzyme that belongs to the wound care class of medications. It is a debriding agent that can digest collagen into the necrotic tissue of the human body. Collagenase works by breaking up and removing dead skin and tissue from wounds. This helps antibiotics work better, speeding up your body's natural healing process.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Santyl ointment are pain or burning sensation in the affected area, redness, and irritation.

Stop using Santyl ointment and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Breathing difficulty;
• Hives;
• Signs of infection, including swelling, redness, fever;
• Swelling in face, throat, lips, or tongue;
• Worsening skin condition

Warnings and Interactions

You should not apply Santyl ointment if you are allergic to Collagenase or any of the ingredients in Santyl ointment. Always follow your doctor's instructions on how much ointment you should apply to your wounds and how to apply it. Never share the medication with another person. Before applying santyl ointment (Collagenase), gently cleanse the wound with sterile saline. Then apply the correct amount as prescribed by your doctor. Cover the wound with a clean bandage or gauze. Avoid using silver or iodine dressings because it may reduce the effectiveness of santyl ointment. Certain detergents and heavy metal ions like mercury or silver used in some antiseptics can adversely affect the enzymatic activity of Collagenase. Always clean the wound before the application of the ointment. Avoid applying near the eyes. Only apply to the affected area. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the ointment.

Before you start using Santyl ointment, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Hypertension;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problem;
• Skin cancer

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeed a child. There are no warnings about the use of Santyl ointment in pregnancy. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if Santyl ointment passes into breast milk. It would be best if you inform your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Santyl ointment and other antiseptic skin products containing heavy metals like mercury, lead, or silver. Avoid drugs, including silver topical, silver nitrate topical, thimerosal topical, and silver sulfadiazine topical.
