Product Details

Mekinist is a cancer medication that is used to treat melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer. It works by interfering with the growth and spred of cancer cells. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications like dabrafenib to treat cancer patients with a “BRAF” gene mutation.

The common side effects of Mekinist include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, chills, tiredness, bleeding, increased blood pressure, joint pain, cough, shortness of breath, swelling, rash, or dry skin.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Cough, shortness of breath
• Eye pain or swelling, vision changes, seeing halos or color dots
• Fever, chills, lightheadedness
• Increased thirst or urination
• Nausea, stomach pain, severe diarrhea
• Severe skin rash, skin pain or swelling, redness and peeling skin on hands and feet
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Signs of blood clot
• Signs of bleeding
• Sign of heart problem

You should not take Mekinist if you are allergic to Trametinib. Before you start taking Mekinist, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

Do not use Mekinist if you are pregnant or nursing. It can harm an unborn or nursing infant. Be sure to use backup birth control while on this medication, and for 4 months after quitting, as it can make hormonal birth control less effective and linger in the body. Do not nurse an infant for a minimum of four months after the last dose.

Precautions

Be sure to take Mekinist exactly as your doctor describes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication. Your doctor will need to perform blood tests to make sure the correct tumor is being treated with this medication. You will need to have your skin checked every 2 months and for up to 6 months after your last dose. Your blood pressure will also need to be checked frequently, along with your heart health, and vision health.

Take Meikinist on an empty stomach at the same time of day every day, at least 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after.

Store in the refrigerator and protect it from the light. Do you not allow the medication to freeze. Keep the tablets in their original container. Do not store in a pill box.

There can be interactions between Mekinist and other medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Mekinist.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Bleeding problems
• Blood clots
• Diabetes
• Eye problems (especially in the retina)
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
• Liver or kidney disease
• Lung disease
• Stomach or intestinal disorder

1. Can Mekinist pass through bodily fluids?
Answer: Yes, Mekinist can pass into bodily fluids such as urine, feces, blood, vomit, and semen. Caregivers need to take precautions by wearing rubber gloves when handling contaminated items. Condoms should be used in the case of sexual intercourse. Wash hands before and after removing gloves and wash any contaminated clothing in a separate load away from other laundry.

2. Can use birth control pills while on Mekinist?
Answer: Mekinist makes any hormonal birth control less effective. These include birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, vaginal rings, etc.) You should be using a backup method to prevent pregnancy, as well as condoms to prevent the passing of bodily fluids to the partner.

3. What happens if I missed a dose?
Answer: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but if your next dose is in less than 12 hours, skip it and take the next one. Do not take two doses at one time.
