Dosage

The brand Advantage Dog is available in the strength of 0.4 ml, 1 ml, 2.5 ml, and 4 ml pipettes. The generic version is not available.

Usage

Advantage Dog (Imidacloprid) is a prescription medication used for the monthly flea treatment of puppies and dogs at least 7 weeks old and 3 lbs. or more. Fleas are small, wingless insects that can cause skin irritation, hair loss, anemia, scabs, and other diseases in dogs. The active ingredient in Advantage Dog is Imidacloprid. Imidacloprid belongs to a class of drugs called neonicotinoid insecticides. It works by disrupting the transmission of nerve signals in the flea's nervous system, eventually leading to paralysis and death.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Advantage Dog are diarrhea, lethargy, appetite loss, and hyperactivity.

Stop administering Advantage Dog and contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog has any of the following serious side effects, such as:
• Agitation;
• Excessive grooming;
• Itching, redness, or irritation at the application site;
• Signs of adverse reactions such as salivation, depression, dilated pupils, panting, generalized muscle tremors

Warnings and Interactions

Before administering Imidacloprid, tell your veterinarian if your dog is allergic to any ingredient in the drug or has any other allergies. Advantage Dog comes as a ready-to-use solution that should be applied topically. Do not administer this product orally. Twist and pull off the cap on the Advantage Dog pipette to break the seal. Have your dog stand. Part the fur to reveal the skin. Place the tube tip on the skin and squeeze the contents directly onto the skin. You may need to apply more than one tube depending on your dog's weight and the level of fleas. Do not apply this medicine while your dog is wet. Use a soap-free shampoo if you are washing your dog while applying this medicine. Advantage Dog is for dogs only. Do not use this product on cats. For the first 30 minutes after application, ensure your pet cannot lick the product from application sites on themselves or other treated dogs. Separate treated dogs from one another and other pets to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion. This drug is not for use in humans. Children should not contact treated dogs for two hours after application. Avoid contact with your skin when administering Advantage Dog. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling. If contact with your skin or clothing occurs, take off contaminated clothing. Wash skin immediately with plenty of soap and water.
