Usage

Elavil (Amitriptyline) is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of depression. It contains the active ingredient amitriptyline, which is a type of drug called a tricyclic antidepressant. Elavil works by affecting the balance of certain natural chemicals called serotonin in your brain. This helps patients with depression to improve their mood. • Seizures;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Elavil if you are allergic to Mirtazapine or to any ingredients of this medication or:
• If you have taken any MAO inhibitors in the past 14 days, Some examples of MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, selegiline, phenelzine, and rasagiline;
• If you have recently had a heart attack

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and if you have had:

• Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia;
• Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);

Elavil can cause dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, thus, increases the risk of falling. Do not stop using this medication unless directed by your doctor; it may take up to 4 weeks before your symptoms improve. Alcohol or marijuana can make you more dizzy. Do not drive or perform any activity that requires alertness until you can do it safely. Elavil may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds or sunlamps. Wear Ombrelle sunscreen and protective clothing when you are outdoors. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. There may be a drug interaction between Elavil and other medications, especially: blood thinners, drugs to treat irregular heart rate, NSAIDs, other antidepressants, etc. As mentioned above, taking Elavil with an MAO inhibitor can cause a severe, potentially fatal, drug interaction.
