The serious side effects may include:

• Bloody or tarry stools
• Blurred vision or eye pain
• Diarrhea
• Fever
• Increased joint pain or swelling
• Increased pressure inside the skull
• Joint stiffness
• Low adrenal gland hormones
• Rapid weight gain
• Rectal irritation
• Seeing halos around lights
• Seizures
• Severe headache

You should not use Kenalog if you are allergic to Triamcinolone, if you have a fungal infection, or a condition called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

You should not use Kenalog while pregnant or nursing, as there can be adverse effects for the baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or are nursing.

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed.

Kenalog is given through a needle and injected into different areas of the body: into muscle, into space around a joint or tendon, or into a lesion on the skin. This injection is delivered by a healthcare provider.

Not all conditions will require the same dosage of medication. Some are given only once, while others may be given at regular intervals.

Be aware that Kenalog can suppress your immune system and make it easier for you to get an infection. Call your doctor if you notice unusual bleeding, bruising, or signs of infection.

Long-term use of steroids can cause harmful effects on your eyes. If you receive this medication for longer than 6 weeks, you may need to have regular eye exams.

It’s possible you may need to limit your salt intake and add potassium supplements while on Kenalog.

Do not stop using this medication abruptly after long-term, repeated use. You could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

There may be an interaction between Kenalog and other medications, especially antibiotics, antifungal medications, birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, blood thinners, diuretics, insulin or oral diabetes medicines, NSAIDs, seizure medications, or anything used to treat tuberculosis. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Kenalog.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Active or chronic infection

• Glaucoma
• High blood pressure

Questions and Answers

1. What should I avoid while taking Kenalog?
Answer: If the injection is given in the joint, avoid using that joint through strenuous activity or high impact, as you could cause damage to the joint. Avoid being near sick people or those with active infections.

2. Can I get immunizations while taking Kenalog?
Answer: Yes, but you will want to avoid any “live” vaccines or toxoid vaccines, or you could develop a serious infection. Live vaccines include measles, mumps, rubella, polio, rotavirus, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), and zoster (shingles).

3. Can children take Kenalog? Yes, but steroids can affect growth in children.
Answer: If you notice your child is not growing at a normal rate while using Kenalog, be sure to tell your doctor right away.
