Usage

Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, gonorrhea, typhoid fever, infectious diarrhea, infections of the skin, bone, joint, abdomen, and prostate. This medication is also used to treat and prevent plague and inhalation anthrax. Ciprofloxacin may also be used to treat bronchitis, sinus infections, or urinary tract infections if other treatment options are not available. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Cipro is only used for bacterial infections and will not work for virus infections such as the common cold or flu.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common Ciprofloxacin side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, nausea, pale skin, rash, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, vaginal itching or discharge, and vomiting. Stop taking this medication and call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects:
• Low blood sugar;
• Nerve damage symptoms – burning pain in your hands, feet, numbness, tingling;
• Serious mood or behavior changes;
• Signs of tendon rupture – sudden, unusual pain, swelling, stiffness, popping sound in any joint; you should rest that joint and seek medical care.

You should not use Cipro if you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin or if you:
• Also take Tizanidine;
• Are allergic to other fluoroquinolones

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

• Arthritis or joint problems (especially in children);
• Diabetes, low blood sugar;
• Heart problems, or a heart attack;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Long QT syndrome in you or a family member;
• Low levels of potassium in your blood;
• Muscle weakness, myasthenia gravis;
• Nerve problems;
• Trouble swallowing pills

Do not take Cipro with dairy products or with calcium-fortified juice. This medication could make you sunburn more easily. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when you are outdoors. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescriptions, OTC, and herbal medications. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not breastfeed while taking Ciprofloxacin and for 2 days after your last dose. Ask your doctor about breastfeeding if you take Cipro for anthrax exposure. Do not give Cipro to a child without a doctor’s instructions.
