Betadine Information

Betadine Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com currently offers the brand Betadine from Canada manufactured by Purdue. The generic version is not available.

Dosage

Betadine is available in the strength of 5%/100 ml spray, 10%/100 ml & 10%/500 ml solution, and 50 ml sore throat spray.

Usage

Betadine (Povidone-Iodine) is an over-the-counter medication used as an antiseptic for treating common skin infections such as infections of the skin around the nails, prevention of infections in minor burns, cuts, and abrasions. The active ingredient in Betadine products is Povidone-iodine. Povidone-iodine belongs to the class of medications called Antiseptic. Povidone-Iodine works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. As a small molecule, Iodine in Betadine can easily penetrate microorganisms and oxidizes essential proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. Betadine may be used for other purposes not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Betadine are skin irritation, itching, skin blistering or crusting, and redness may occur.

Stop using Betadine and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Hair bumps (folliculitis);
• Hearing problems;
• Fungal or bacteria infections on the affected skin;
• Severe skin burns

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Betadine solution or spray, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to povidone-iodine or any other ingredients in this preparation. Some forms of povidone-iodine topical are used inside the mouth to provide temporary relief of minor mouth pain or irritation, sore throat, or canker sore pain. Betadine solution is for skin use only unless you are prescribed the sore throat spray. You should wash your hands before using it. Avoid eye contact or getting Betadine inside your mouth. If this occurs, wipe off the medication and rinse thoroughly with water. The affected skin should be cleaned and dried before applying this antiseptic. Betadine Ointment should then be applied to the affected area. Apply a small amount of the medication in a thin layer on the skin, as directed by your doctor. A dressing or bandage may then be used to cover the affected area. Wash your hands after use.

To use Betadine spray in the mouth, spray directly into the mouth or throat. Leave the medicine in place for 15 seconds, then spit it out. Avoid swallowing the spray. To use Betadine as a mouth rinse, gargle or swish the liquid for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow the liquid. It would help if you used it as directed by the manufacturer. Do not use large amounts of this medication or use it for longer than directed. Your condition may not improve faster, and the risk for side effects may be increased. Consult your doctor if your situation does not improve a week after regular use.

Before you start using Betadine, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergic reactions to povidone-iodine;
• Broken skin (for example, due to a burn) as using Betadine solution in these circumstances may cause toxic levels of iodine to be absorbed into your blood;
• Cancer of the thyroid;
• Skin conditions (including eczema, viral skin infections such as shingles, chickenpox, cold sores);
• Thyroid problem, including swelling (nodular colloid goiter, endemic goiter, or Hashimoto's thyroiditis)

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when prescribed. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, avoid applying this medicine to breast areas that may come into contact with the baby's mouth. There may be a drug interaction between Betadine and other drugs such as lithium, wound-treatment preparations containing silver, hydrogen peroxide, or taurolidine, and mercury-containing wound-treatment products.
