Erythromycin is a prescription antibiotic medication that is used for the treatment and prevention of many different types of bacterial infections. Erythromycin belongs to a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. This medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Erythromycin treats or prevents only bacterial infections.

Erythromycin Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects may include diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain or cramping and vomiting. The serious side effects may include:
• Blurred vision;
• Dark urine;
• Drooping eyelids;
• Hearing loss;
• Muscle weakness;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Signs of liver disease;
• Slurred speech;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

You should not take Erythromycin if you are allergic to it or to any other macrolide antibiotics. You should never use or misuse any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness. Erythromycin may cause live bacterial vaccines.
