Dosage

The brand Glumetza and the generic Metformin Extended Release are both available in the strength of 500 mg and 1000 mg tablets.

Usage

Glumetza (Metformin Extended Release) is a prescription medication that is used to control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. This medication is combined with a proper diet and exercise to manage blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Glumetza can be used together with insulin or other medications. Keep in mind that this medication is not to be used in people with type 1 diabetes.

Metformin belongs to the class of medications called biguanides or oral antidiabetic used in the management of type 2 diabetes. Glumetza works by improving the body’s response to insulin. In addition to that, it reduces the amount of blood sugar produced by the liver while lessening the absorption of blood sugar in the intestines, in turn, less sugar will make it into the bloodstream. By controlling high blood sugar, the risks are lower for kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. It may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. (source)

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Glumetza may include diarrhea, low blood sugar, nausea, and upset stomach.

Glumetza may cause lactic acidosis which can be life-threatening. Seek emergency medical help if you have even mild symptoms such as:
• Breathing problems;
• Dizziness;
• Feeling cold;
• Light-headedness, tired or weak;
• Irregular or slow heart rate;
• Stomach pain, vomiting;
• Unusual muscle pain

This is not a complete list of side effects. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that bothers you while you are using this medication.

Warnings and Interactions

Do not use Glumetza if you are allergic to Metformin, or if you have metabolic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis or severe kidney disease. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history and if you use insulin or other oral diabetes medications or if you have ever had:
• Congestive heart failure or heart disease;
• High levels of ketone in your blood or urine;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Glumetza should be taken with a meal unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Do not crush, chew, or break the extended release tablets. This medication may cause you to develop lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood. This may be more likely if you have other medical conditions, a severe infection, chronic alcoholism, or if you are over the age of 65 years old. Avoid drinking alcohol; as it lowers your blood sugar and may increase your risk of lactic acidosis. This medication may lower your blood sugar and make you feel very hungry, dizzy, irritable, confused or shaky. To quickly treat this, eat or drink a fast-acting source of sugar such as fruit juice, hard candy, crackers, raisins, or non-diet soda). Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Metformin and other medications. Glumetza may stimulate ovulation in premenopausal women and increase the risk of pregnancy. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant. You should not breastfeed while using this medication. As stated on Drugs.com, Glumetza should not be given to a child younger than 10 years of age. Some forms of metformin are not approved to be used in children younger than 18 years old.
