Dosage

Niacin is available in the strength of 500 mg tablets and 500 mg no-flush capsules.

Usage

Niacin (Nicotinic acid) is an over-the-counter medication used to prevent and treat Pellagra (niacin deficiency). Niacin deficiency may result from certain medical conditions, poor diet, or long-term use of some medicines. Niacin is also known as vitamin B3. A deficiency can cause diarrhea, confusion, tongue swelling, or peeling skin. Niacin is also used to lower "bad" cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. The active substance in Niacin is Nicotinic acid. Nicotinic acid belongs to a class of medications called B vitamins. It works by reducing the amount of bad cholesterol and triglycerides made by the liver. Your doctor will recommend Niacin as part of a treatment program that may also include exercise, diet, weight control, and other medications.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Niacin are flushing, upset stomach, skin discoloration, headache, cough, and diarrhea.

Stop using Niacin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Irregular heartbeats;
• Light-headedness;
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of high blood sugar such as increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth;
• Symptoms of a heart attack such as chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sweating, nausea;
• Unexplained muscle pain;
• Vision problems

Warnings and Interactions

Before using nicotinic acid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Niacin comes as a tablet and should be used by mouth. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush, chew, or break it open. Take this drug with a low-fat meal or snack. Taking Niacin on an empty stomach can increase its side effects. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. If you stop taking Niacin for any length of time, talk with your doctor before starting the medication again. Avoid eating foods high in fat or cholesterol. They can reduce the effectiveness of Niacin. Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can increase your risk of liver damage and also worsen the flushing effects of Niacin.

Before you start using Niacin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Active bleeding;
• Diabetes;
• Gout;
• Heart disease;
• Hypothyroidism;
• Kidney problems;
• Low blood pressure;
• Severe liver disease;
• Stomach ulcer

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Niacin will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Nicotinic acid passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. There may be a drug interaction between Niacin and other drugs, including aspirin, warfarin, tetracycline, phenytoin, chloramphenicol, etc.
