Orbenin (Cloxacillin) is a prescription medicine used to treat various infections caused by bacteria (such as infections of the skin, bone, heart valve, blood, and lung). The active ingredient in the Orbenin capsule is Cloxacillin. Cloxacillin belongs to the group of medicine called penicillin. It works by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall. It inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis resulting in the death of the bacterial.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Orbenin are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, and a dark hairy tongue.

Stop using Orbenin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Easy bruising;
• Muscle ache or cramps;
• Recurrent sore throat;
• Severe watery or bloody diarrhea;
• Signs of kidney problems such as blood-stained urine or low urine production;
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing);
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

Warnings and Interactions

You should inform your doctor if you are allergic to Cloxacillin or other penicillin-like medications (such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin) or cephalosporins (such as cephalexin, cefuroxime) or if you have any other allergies. The Cloxacillin capsules should be swallowed whole with a cup of water. Do not chew or break them before consuming them. Follow your doctor's prescription as directed. It would be best if you continued to take this medication for as long as your doctor prescribes it. Reach your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your condition. You may notice a black hairy change on your tongue while using this medication. This is one of the harmless symptoms, and it usually goes away after treatment. You should inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve despite being compliant with your medication as prescribed.

Before you start using Orbenin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• History of penicillin allergy;
• Kidney problem

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. You should inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a child. For example, Cloxacillin should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. This medication passes into breast milk. Taking Cloxacillin may affect your baby if you are a breastfeeding mother. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Orbenin and other drugs such as warfarin, typhoid vaccine, oral contraceptive pill, aminoglycosides, tetracycline, and steroid medications.
