Prostigmin (Neostigmine) is a prescription medication used to treat symptoms of myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the antibodies destroy the communication between the nerves and muscle, resulting in skeletal muscle weakness. This condition has symptoms such as blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, drooping of the eyelids, impaired speech, or weakness of the eye muscles. Myasthenia Gravis affects the voluntary muscles of the body, especially the ones controlling the eyes, mouth, throat, and limbs. The active ingredient in Prostigmin is Neostigmine. Neostigmine belongs to a class of drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It works against Myasthenia Gravis by inhibiting the cholinesterase enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, increasing the level and duration of the neurotransmitter action.
