by Carissa Andrews - July 15, 2019

Summer is in full swing and it’s tempting to head straight to the beach without a care in the world. However, it only takes a few short minutes for the sun to damage your skin, leading to sunburn, blisters, and peeling. Most of which stick around, making life uncomfortable for the next few days or even week. Worse yet, repeated over-exposure can lead to skin cancer and no one wants that. Instead, we have a few tips and tricks to make sure you’re protecting your skin and still having fun in the sun. But first, let’s talk about our favorite sunscreen options, so you can go outside prepared with the best sunscreen protection on the market for 2019.

Summer Sun Protection Tips

If you’re ready to go out for a day at the beach, be sure to look over these tips before you leave. They just might be a life-saver. Or, at the very least, a skin saver.

1. Sunscreen Rules for Summer

We all know the first line of defense when it comes to playing out in the sun is to protect ourselves with sunscreen. However, with new concerns regarding whether or not a sunscreen is reef safe, you’ll want to take a moment to make sure you pick up the right brands.

o Look for oxybenzone and paraben free

Chemicals such as oxybenzone and parabens have been shown to play a direct role in the degradation of a coral reef’s delicate ecosystem.

o Get water resistant

There’s actually no such thing as waterproof sunscreens, so steer clear of any claiming that there are.

o Be skeptical of labels

Don’t just take a label at face value. There is no legally agreed definition for what “reef safe” is yet, so there’s no regulation keeping the marketing peeps at a sunscreen company from listing it—even if it’s not accurate.

o Reapply often

Unfortunately, sunscreens are not a slap on and go all day sorta thing. You have to reapply every 15-80 minutes, depending on how much you’re out in the direct sunlight and which sun protection you’re using.

For more info on sunscreens, be sure to check out our blog: The Complete Guide to Picking Out A Sunscreen.

2. Cover yourself

Whenever possible, use long-sleeves and pants, SPF clothing, and large brimmed hats to protect yourself from overexposure to the sun.

3. Seek the shade

Take breaks inside, find a shady area of the beach, or even bring your own popup tent or umbrella to create shade for yourself.

4. Stay inside

If you plan to do some outdoors excursions—to the beach or anywhere else—consider keeping the hours between 10am and 4pm off limits. This is when the sun is most likely to do the most damage and for babies and small children, this one simple trick can save the day.

If you’re ready to have a fun, sun-filled summer, it’s best to go out prepared. Lean on our summer sun protection tips and be sure to find the best summer sunscreen protection for you. If you choose either the Banana Boat Simply Protect or the Garnier Ombrelle Complete, you can rest assured you’re getting a quality product that’s safe for you, your kids, and the environment, too.
