Dosage

Ala-Cort is available in the strength of 2 %/150 ml and 2.5 %/150 ml lotion.

Usage

Ala-Cort (Hydrocortisone) is a prescription lotion used to treat symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, itching of the genitals and anal region, insect bites, and stings. It also treats allergic reactions, skin irritation, and other skin problems. Hydrocortisone lotion reduces swelling, itching, and irritation associated with these conditions. It also treats low cortisol levels caused by adrenal gland diseases. The active ingredient in Ala-Cort is Hydrocortisone. Hydrocortisone belongs to the class of drugs called topical corticosteroids. It works by blocking the action of certain proteins that promote swelling and inflammation. As a result, Hydrocortisone reduces fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and subsequent scar tissue formation.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Ala-Cort are nausea, diarrhea, acneiform lesions, skin atrophy, dry mouth, mood changes, and skin discoloration. Stop using Ala-Cort and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Breathing difficulties;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Redness and swelling at the site of application;
• Slow wound healing;
• Small red bumps on the skin;
• Stretch marks;
• Swelling of face, lips, throat, or tongue

Warnings and Interactions

Before applying Ala-Cort lotion on your skin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Hydrocortisone or have a skin infection that may prevent you from applying the lotion. Hydrocortisone comes as a lotion for use on the skin. You should apply the lotion as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Apply only a tiny amount of Ala-Cort lotion to the affected skin and rub it in gently. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage or other covering. Do not apply more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes. Do not apply it to other areas of your body or use it to treat different skin conditions unless directed by your doctor. If you have psoriasis, your doctor may recommend an occlusive dressing. Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your symptoms after two weeks of regular use of Hydrocortisone lotion.

Before you start using Ala-Cort, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Adrenal gland disorder;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Eye problems such as cataracts;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Severe skin infections

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. Steroid cream like Hydrocortisone is not recommended during pregnancy unless prescribed and monitored by a dermatologist. Likewise, you should consult your doctor before using Hydrocortisone lotion while breastfeeding a baby. As a precaution, if you're breastfeeding, wash off any cream you put on your breasts before feeding your baby. There may be a drug interaction between Ala-Cort and other drugs such as metformin, insulin, amiodarone, and other steroid-containing topical medications.
