Product Details

Alvesco (Ciclesonide) is a corticosteroid used to inhibit inflammation in the lungs for people who suffer from asthma. It can prevent asthma attacks in adults and children over the age of 12. It should be used regularly to prevent or control asthma symptoms, but should not be taken as a rescue inhaler.

Common side effects may include unpleasant taste in the mouth, dry mouth or irritation, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, hoarse voice, mild itching or skin rash, joint pain, back pain, or headache. The serious side effects may include:

• Bronchospasm
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Sores or white patches in the mouth or throat
• Vision problems (tunnel vision or blurred vision)
• Wheezing, chocking or other breathing problems after use
• Worsening asthma symptoms

You should not use Alvesco if you are allergic to Ciclesonide. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. It isn’t known how Alvesco might affect an unborn or nursing infant. It’s best to avoid using this medication or talk to your doctor about the risks.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. This medication is often used once daily, in the morning or evening. The Alvesco inhaler must be primed before your first use or any time you haven’t used the inhaler for 10 days or more. Place inhaler to the mouth and breathe in. Rinse your mouth after inhaling the medication. You should not start or stop this medication suddenly. Store the inhaler at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Be sure it is not near open flames or left in a hot car. Never puncture or burn an empty canister.

There may be an interaction between Alvesco and other medications, including antibiotics, antifungal medications, HIV/AIDS medicines, or antidepressants. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Alvesco. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Glaucoma or history of cataracts
• Herpes infection of the eyes
• Infection of the mouth or throat (like oral thrush)
• Personal or family history of osteoporosis
• Tuberculosis

Questions and Answers

1. Can you overdose with Alvesco?
Answer: Alvesco is a corticosteroid, but an overdose of this inhaled medication isn’t expected to be life-threatening. However, long term use of steroids can lead to unwanted side effects like thinning skin, easy bruising and more. Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned.

2. How long will it take for Alvesco to work?
Answer: It can take up to four weeks for your symptoms to improve. Remember to use this medication as prescribed and use it consistently for the best results.

3. Can Alvesco be taken as a rescue inhaler?
Answer: No, this medication is meant to be used consistently as a preventative inhaler. The corticosteroid in this medication will bring down inflammation in the lungs slowly, but will not help if you are already suffering from an asthma attack.
