Product Detail

Azilect (Rasagiline) is used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Rasagiline is an enzyme blocker (MAO inhibitor). This medication may be used alone or with other medications (e.g, levodopa, carbidopa) to treat movement disorders caused by Parkinson’s disease. This medication works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals (dopamine) in the brain. Rasagiline does not cure Parkinson’s disease, but it may improve shakiness (tremor), muscle stiffness, and sudden switching between normal movement and stiffness (“on-off” problems). It may also improve your range of motion and ability to walk, dress, and exercise.

The common side effects include constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, dry mouth, decreased appetite, headache, depressed mood, dizziness, spinning sensation, hair loss, skin rash, impotence, low libido, and strange dreams. The serious side effects include:
• Dangerously high blood pressure;
• Fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, tremors, muscle twitching;
• Passing out;
• Sudden numbness or weakness;
• Unusual thoughts/behavior, agitation, hallucinations, fainting

Do not take Azilect if you are allergic to Rasagiline. Before you start taking this medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. It is unknown whether Azilect will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Azilect. It is unknown whether Rasagiline passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Azilect may slow breast milk production. You should not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Questions and Answers

1. What is the recommended dose for Azilect?
Answer: The recommended dose for Azilect is 1mg once daily but if someone is already taking Levodopa, it is 0.5mg, which may be increased to 1mg once daily if necessary.

2. Why should I avoid eating cheese while I am taking Azilect?
Answer: You should avoid eating aged cheeses because they contain very high amounts of a substance called tyramine. MAO inhibitors (Rasagiline) can potentially cause tyramine to accumulate in the body and lead to a dramatic rise in blood pressure.
