Use: Allergies, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, asthma
Cortone contains the active ingredient Cortisone Acetate. It belongs to the group of drugs called glucocorticoids (or corticosteroids), which are types of steroids. Corticosteroids are used in the treatment of many conditions in which inflammation is a symptom. These include arthritis, asthma and COPD, allergic disorders, lupus, psoriasis and ulcerative colitis. Cortisone Acetate works by blocking the release of substances within the body that a responsible for causing inflammation. The Cortone brand of Cortisone Acetate is used to treat inflammation in patients with arthritis only.
Cortone Side Effects
The possible Cortone side effects include:
• Acne, dry skin, thinning skin, bruising or discoloration;
• Changes in the shape or location of body fat;
• Headache, dizziness, spinning sensation;
• Increased sweating;
• Nausea, stomach pain, bloating;
• Sleep problems, mood changes;
• Slow wound healing.
More serious side effects may include:
• Bloody or tarry stools;
• High blood pressure;
• Low potassium levels;
• Pancreatitis;
• Problems with vision or balance;
• Severe depression, strange thoughts or behaviour;
• Swelling, rapid weight gain.
Cortone Safety in Pregnancy and Children
Before purchasing, tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:
• Congestive heart failure or other heart condition;
• Depression;
• Diabetes;
• Glaucoma or cataracts;
• Herpes infection of the eyes;
• High blood pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Muscle disorder (i.e. myasthenia gravis);
• Osteoporosis;
• Stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis;
• Thyroid disorders.
Cortone has not been given a pregnancy category, and it is not known whether Cortisone Acetate may cause harm to an unborn baby. You msut discuss the risks and benefits of taking Cortone with your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive. The Cortone brand of Cortisone Acetate is not intended for us in children under the age of 16 years. You should consult a doctor before giving Cortone to a child.
