Dosage

The brand Diabeta and the generic Glyburide are available in the strength of 2.5 mg and 5 mg tablets.

Usage

Diabeta (Glyburide) is a prescription medication used with diet and exercise to treat symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) in people with type 2 Diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent). The active ingredient in the Diabeta tablet is Glyburide. Glyburide belongs to the class of medication called Sulfonylurea. It increases insulin release (a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows sugar to enter cells where it is needed for energy). As a result, it helps the body use insulin more efficiently. Maintaining your blood sugar levels within normal range helps to prevent complications of diabetes such as blindness, kidney damage, stroke, and heart attack.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Diabeta are headache, change in taste, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, weight loss, etc.

Stop using Diabeta and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Double vision or difficulty with sight;
• Excessive hunger;
• Fast heartbeat;
• Nightmares;
• Restless sleep;
• Shakiness;
• Severe headache;
• Shock (e.g., cold, damp skin; confusion; shakiness; nausea; weak, rapid pulse);
• Slurred speech;
• Skin redness, itching, or rash;
• Symptoms of blood sugar, such as feeling anxious, sudden fall, sweating palm, confusion, or difficulty concentrating;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

Warnings and Interactions

Diabeta comes as a tablet for oral use only. You should take this medication by mouth with breakfast or the first main meal of the day as directed by your doctor. It is usually taken once daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. It would be best to follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Diabeta (Glyburide) can cause an extremely low blood sugar level, the signs being sweating, dizziness, and shivering. To avoid these side effects, eat your meals on time and drink sweets or fruit juice for immediate relief. Avoid using this medicine if you are allergic to it. Alcohol should be avoided while using this medicine, as it can also lower your blood glucose levels. Inform your doctor if there is no significant reduction in your blood sugar despite compliance with your medication.

Before you start using Diabeta, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• An enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD);
• A nerve disorder affecting bodily functions;
• An allergy to sulfa drugs;
• Diabetic ketoacidosis with or without coma;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Pregnancy may cause or worsen diabetes. We encourage you to have an open conversation with your doctor about managing your blood sugar while pregnant. Your doctor may substitute insulin for this drug during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Reach out to your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Diabeta and other drugs such as bosentan, aripiprazole, aspirin, bexarotene, captopril, carbamazepine, insulin, isocarboxazid, etc.
