Usage

Dimebon (Latrepirdine) is a prescription medication currently undergoing clinical trials for its potential benefit to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Huntington's disease (HD) patients, which has shown many positive effects with improvements in memory, cognition, and activities of daily living. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive degenerative brain disorder that gradually destroys a person's memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate, and carry out daily activities. Latrepirdine was previously used as an antihistamine to treat allergies. The active ingredient in Dimebon is Latrepirdine. Latrepirdine belongs to the class of medicine called first-generation antihistamine (H1 antagonist). It regulates the activity of certain channels and neurotransmitter systems, including L-type and voltage-gated calcium channels, AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors, α-adrenergic receptors, and serotonergic or dopaminergic receptors. As a result, Dimebon protects brain cells from damage and enhances brain cell survival by stabilizing and improving brain function.
