Usage

Emla Cream (Lidocaine/Prilocaine) is a prescription local anesthetic cream with the active ingredient Lidocaine and Prilocaine. This cream is used on normal, unbroken skin or on the outer genital area to prevent pain before certain procedures such as inserting a needle, skin grafts, or skin laser surgery. This medication works by blocking nerve signals in your body.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Emla cream may include changes in skin color where the cream is applied, itching, mild burning at the application site, and rash.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Blurred vision, confusion or ringing in your ears;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Emla cream if you are allergic to any type of numbing medication. Before you use Emla, tell your doctor if you have:
• A personal or family history of blood cell disorder called methemoglobinemia;
• A genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency;
• Liver disease

Emla cream is a topical cream for skin use only. Avoid injuring treated skin areas while they are numb. You should also avoid coming into contact with very hot or very cold surfaces. Tell your doctor about all the medications you are using including prescription, OTC, herbal products and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Emla cream and other medications such as sulfa drugs, seizure medications, heart rhythm medications, chloroquine, dapsone, nitrofurantoin, isosorbide dinitrate, nitroglycerin, quinine, etc. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
