Ferodan Information

Is your diet lacking in iron? Perhaps you have an iron deficiency and need to take care of it with iron supplements. If this sounds like you, you may be interested to know that we carry Ferodan, a brand name over-the-counter (OTC) iron supplement, from Canada. This iron supplement is in the form of ferrous sulfate, but there is not a generic equivalent at this time. You can purchase Ferodan in the strength of 30mg/ml/250ml, 30mg/ml/500ml syrup, and 75mg/ml/50ml infant drops right here in our online store.

Product Details

Ferodan is a type of iron, which is essentially a body mineral that you would ordinarily get through the foods you eat. It becomes part of your blood and carries oxygen to tissues and organs. Ferodan is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (low levels of iron).

The common side effects of Ferodan includes: constipation, upset stomach, black or dark-colored stools, or temporary staining of the teeth.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

You should not take Ferodan if you are allergic to Ferrous Sulfate, iron, or do not wish to consume animal byproducts. Before you start taking Ferodan, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

This medication can cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby. You should not use this medication while you are pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

Precautions

Be sure to take Ferodan exactly as your doctor describes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication.

Take Ferodan on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before or after a meal, with a full glass of water. Do not crush, break, chew, or open an extended release tablet or capsule. Swallow the medication whole. For oral syrup or drops, measure your dose accurately with the special spoon or medicine cup. Do not use a regular table spoon.

To prevent tooth staining, mix the liquid with water or juice (not milk) and drink through a straw. If staining occurs, clean your teeth with baking soda 1x per week.

Do not consume antacids or antibiotics within 2 hours before or after taking Ferodan.

Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

There can be interactions between Ferodan and other medications. In particular, Lithostat, chloramphenicol, Tagamet, Didronel, dimercaprol, levodopa, methyldopa, and penicillamine. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Ferodan.

An overdose of Ferodan can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose of this medicine, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms include: nausea, severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, shallow breathing, weak or rapid pulse, pale skin, blue lips, and seizures.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Hemolytic anemia
• If you’re an alcoholic
• If you receive regular blood transfusions
• Iron overload syndrome
• Porphyria
• Thalassemia
