Usage

Ferofit (Ferrous Fumarate – 100 mg of Elemental Iron) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. Anemia occurs when the body lacks iron to produce sufficient hemoglobin, a protein in the red blood cells that transports oxygen in the body. Anemia is common in people with low iron intake, poor iron absorption, iron loss due to blood loss and increased iron needs during pregnancy. Ferofit is also used to treat peripheral neuropathy (feeling of tingling sensation due to nerve damage), folic acid deficiency, and other related symptoms. The active ingredient in Ferofit is Ferrous Fumarate. Ferrous Fumarate belongs to a class of drugs called iron supplements or multivitamins. It works by replenishing the body’s iron levels, helping the body produce hemoglobin.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Ferofit are appetite loss, diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach upset.

Stop using Ferofit and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:

• Changes in urine colour;
• Severe nausea;
• Severe stomach upset;

Your doctor will advise you on how long to take the tablets. You can stop taking this medicine three months after your anemia has been corrected. Do not take Ferofit for more than six months. Before you start using Ferofit, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Have bleeding disorders;
• Have blood cancers;
• Have had frequent blood transfusions;
• Have had major stomach surgery;

Taking iron supplements when breastfeeding does not affect how much iron gets to your nursing baby. If your baby is diagnosed with anemia, the baby will be treated separately. There may be a drug interaction between Ferofit and other drugs, such as levothyroxine, cimetidine, antacids, doxycycline, levodopa, neomycin, etc.
