Locoid (Hydrocortisone Butyrate) is a topical prescription medication used to treat various skin conditions not caused by microorganisms. Among these are eczema and dermatitis (itching), including atopic (childhood) eczema, photodermatitis, and dermatitis caused by skin irritants and allergies. The active ingredient in Locoid is Hydrocortisone Butyrate. Hydrocortisone Butyrate belongs to the class of drugs called topical corticosteroids. It works by relieving the symptoms of a flare-up by reducing inflammation, itching, and redness. This is made possible by stabilizing the leukocyte lysosomal membranes, thereby preventing the release of destructive acid hydrolases from the leukocytes.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Locoid are skin atrophy, dryness or redness of the application site, itching, striae, folliculitis, changes in skin color, and acne form lesion.

Stop using Locoid and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Stinging, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, redness, or peeling at the application site;
• Worsening of your conditions or got infected by a microorganism

Warnings and Interactions

Locoid is a topical cream and should be used only on the skin. However, it would be best not to use it on the face, groin, or underarms unless directed to do so by your doctor. Apply a small amount to the areas of the skin that are inflamed. Then gently rub it into the skin until it has disappeared. If you are using a scalp application, apply it to the affected area of the scalp, rub it in gently, and then allow the site to dry again naturally. Do not use hydrocortisone butyrate on any open sores or areas of infected skin. You should apply the cream as directed by your doctor. You should avoid getting this cream to your eyes and wash your hands immediately after use.

It would be best to know that Locoid cream does not cure your condition but will help relieve the symptoms. Therefore, you should continue using Hydrocortisone butyrate until the flare-up has gone, and then stop it. Regular usage for 7-14 days is often sufficient to relieve you of your symptoms. If your symptoms have not improved after this time (or if they worsen), speak again with your doctor for further medical advice. You should not use a steroid medication like Locoid for an extended period.

Before you start using Locoid, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Any areas of skin infections;
• An allergic reaction to a skin preparation;
• Inflamed skin around the mouth is inflamed (perioral dermatitis);
• Skin problems associated with syphilis (a sexually transmitted disease) or tuberculosis;
• Treating rosacea or acne

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. You should not use Locoid Cream if pregnant or breastfeeding unless necessary. There may be a small risk of harm to your baby if you use any corticosteroid cream while pregnant, so if your doctor does prescribe it for you, know you are pregnant, and you should not use it in large amounts for a long time. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. There may be a drug interaction between Locoid and other drugs, such as other steroid creams.
