Multaq Information

Multaq at CanadaPharmacyOnline.com

Brand Multaq, manufactured by Sanofi Aventis, is available in many countries worldwide, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

The generic version of dronedarone is currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).

Dosage:

Multaq is available as 400 mg oral tablets.

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage based on the individual needs and medical conditions.

Usage:

Multaq (dronedarone) is a prescription medication used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular hospitalizations in people with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation who are currently in sinus rhythm or who will be cardioverted. Atrial fibrillation is a disorder that occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat rapidly and irregularly, leading to irregular heartbeats and rhythm disturbances in the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles). Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation lasts less than a week, while persistent atrial fibrillation lasts longer than a week.

Important Note: Multaq is contraindicated in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation due to an increased risk of death, stroke, and heart failure.

Mechanism of Action:
Multaq (dronedarone) is a class III antiarrhythmic drug. It blocks multiple ion channels, including potassium, sodium, and calcium channels, to control heart rate and stabilize the heart rhythm. This action helps to reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation.

Use Multaq exactly as your doctor prescribes, following the instructions in the product monograph | Sanofi. Consult your doctor for personalized guidance and safe use.

The information below summarizes some, but not all, potential side effects, risks, and interactions. Before using Multaq, it is essential to discuss all potential side effects, risks, and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects:

The information below is a partial list of side effects; individual reactions can vary. Before starting Multaq, it is crucial to discuss potential side effects and risks with your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects – The following are examples of some common side effects of Multaq; other side effects may also occur. Contact your doctor promptly if any side effects persist, worsen, or concern you, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms.
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Skin rash
• Vomiting

Serious or rare side effects – Stop using Multaq and seek immediate medical attention right away if you experience any of the following:
• Allergic reactions, including angioedema, hives, and trouble breathing
• Dry cough (especially if new or worsening, or accompanied by shortness of breath, as it could indicate pulmonary toxicity)
• Little or no urination
• Signs of heart problems, including rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, and swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
• Signs of liver problems, including appetite loss, tiredness, dark urine, itching, or yellowing of the skin or eyes

Contraindications:

This is not an exhaustive list of contraindications. It is crucial to discuss all your medical conditions, past and present, and all medications you are using with your doctor or pharmacist before starting Multaq.

Multaq should not be used if:
• You are allergic to dronedarone or any of the inactive ingredients in Multaq.
• You have a serious heart rhythm or conduction problem, including:
o A heart rate less than 50 beats per minute (severe bradycardia).
o A prolonged QTc interval (an abnormal heart rhythm measurement) or a PR interval greater than 280 ms.
o Sick sinus syndrome, second-degree AV block, or third-degree AV block, unless you have a functioning pacemaker.
• You have permanent atrial fibrillation.
• You have severe heart failure (especially recently decompensated or NYHA Class IV).
• You have severe liver disease.

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, past and present, before starting Multaq. This is crucial because certain conditions can affect whether Multaq is right for you. These conditions may include, but are not limited to:
• Heart failure
• Liver injury
• QT prolongation

Driving:
Multaq can cause dizziness and fatigue, which may impair your ability to react. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.

Electrolyte Imbalance:
Electrolyte imbalances like hypokalemia and hypomagnesia can increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems when using Multaq. These conditions should be corrected before starting treatment with Multaq.

Liver Toxicity:
Multaq can cause severe liver injury, including fatal hepatic failure. Your doctor will perform frequent liver function tests before you start treatment with Multaq and monthly for the first 6 months of treatment. The tests will be periodic thereafter.

Permanent Atrial Fibrillation:
Do not use Multaq if you have permanent atrial fibrillation. There is an increased risk of death, stroke, and heart failure. Your doctor will carry out tests to determine if your atrial fibrillation is permanent or if you are eligible for Multaq.

Drug Interactions:

Before using Multaq, it is essential to discuss all potential risks and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist. For complete information about potential drug interactions, consult the product monograph in Canada and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.

Provide your doctor with a complete list of all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Multaq can interact with other medicines, but is not limited to cyclosporine, ritonavir, rifampin, propranolol, verapamil, digoxin, warfarin, atorvastatin, amiodarone, clarithromycin, imipramine, ketoconazole, and promethazine.

Grapefruit:
Avoid taking grapefruit juice or consuming grapefruit products while taking Multaq. Grapefruit products can increase the level of dronedarone in the body, potentially increasing the risk of side effects.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

If you are pregnant or become pregnant, tell your doctor before using Multaq. Dronedarone may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy when using this medicine. If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, inform your doctor. It is unknown if dronedarone is excreted in human breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits of using Multaq when breastfeeding with your doctor before using it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Multaq at Canada Pharmacy Online

Why is Multaq more affordable in Canada than in the United States?
