Dosage

The generic Nimodipine is available in the strength of 30 mg tablets.

Usage

Nimotop (Nimodipine) is a prescription medication used to prevent cerebral vasospasm in a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the space surrounding the brain that occurs when a weakened blood vessel in the brain bursts). The active substance in Nimotop is Nimodipine. Nimodipine belongs to the class of medication called calcium channel blockers (dihydropyridine). It dilates the small resistant cerebral vessels and increases the blood flow to injured brain tissue. This mechanism of action promotes blood flow to the injured brain tissue and prevents brain damage.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Nimotop are a sudden drop in blood pressure, diarrhea, headache, abdominal discomfort, and body rash.

Stop using Nimotop and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bleeding per rectum;
• Recurrent infection;
• Rebound vasospasm or worsening of your condition;
• Severe abdominal pain or bloating;
• Symptoms suggestive of heart failure such as leg swelling, cough, and dyspnea;
• The yellowness of the eyes or skin

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start using Nimodipine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Nimodipine or any other calcium channel blockers. Nimodipine comes as a gel capsule and should be taken with a cup of water. Swallow the tablet whole, and do not crush it. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. You should follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Nimodipine should commence as early as four days after bleeding starts in the brain. Take the Nimodipine capsule as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes it. If you are using the liquid Nimodipine, it would be best to measure your dosage with the special measuring spoon or discuss it with your doctor. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. This medication is usually taken for 2 to 4 weeks. Follow your doctor's directions carefully. Your condition may become worse if the drug is stopped too soon. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens.

Before you start using Nimotop, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• Fluid in the brain or severely raised intracranial pressure;
• Head injury or bleeding from the head or any orifices;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed your child. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Nimotop and other drugs such as rifampicin, phenobarbital, phenytoin, or carbamazepine.
