Piroxicam (Piroxicam) is a prescription medication used to treat arthritis, relieve pain and swelling affecting the joints. The active ingredient in this medication is Piroxicam. Piroxicam belongs to the class of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins in body tissues by inhibiting Scyclooxygenase, cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), and cyclooxygenase -2 (COX-2) enzymes. It results in blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Piroxicam are abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, oedema, flatulence, headache, nausea, pruritus, rash, tinnitus, vertigo and vomiting.

Stop using Piroxicam and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A very bad skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) may happen;
• Change in eyesight, ringing in the ears;
• Chest pain or pressure;
• Feeling very tired or weak, flu-like symptoms;
• Signs of an allergic reaction;
• Signs of bleeding;
• Signs of kidney problems like unable to pass urine, change in how much urine is passed, blood in the urine, or a big weight gain;
Signs of high potassium levels;
• Signs of high blood pressure like very bad headache or dizziness, passing out, or change in eyesight;
• Shortness of breath, a big weight gain, or swelling in the arms or legs;
• Swelling;
• Weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, drooping on one side of the face, or blurred eyesight

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Piroxicam if you are allergic to Feldene or have ever had an asthma attack or severe allergic reaction after taking aspirin or an NSAID. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had. NSAIDs increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. It would be best to speak to your doctor if you noticed any of these effects. You should use your medication strictly as prescribed by your doctor.

Before you start using Piroxicam, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Cardiac problems such as heart failure, recent heart attack;
• Gastrointestinal bleeding;
• Kidney problems;
• Nasal polyps or had swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat; unusual hoarseness; or trouble breathing with aspirin or NSAID use;
• Trouble getting pregnant or you are having your fertility checked

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Piroxicam can affect pregnancy in the third trimester and at other times during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. There may be a drug interaction between Piroxicam and other drugs such as aminolaevulinic acid, apixaban, benazepril, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, ketorolac aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for anticoagulants such as warfarin etc.
