Usage

Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) is a prescription medication used to prevent or treat osteoporosis in women who have undergone menopause. Osteoporosis is when the bones become thin and weak and break easily. The drug is also used to treat osteoporosis in men and prevent or treat osteoporosis in men and women, taking glucocorticoids, a type of corticosteroid medication that may cause osteoporosis. Zoledronic acid is also used to treat Paget's disease of bone, a condition in which the bones are soft and weak and may be deformed, painful, or easily broken. The active ingredient in Reclast is Zoledronic Acid. Zoledronic Acid belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. It works by altering bone formation and breakdown in the body. This can slow bone loss and may help prevent bone fractures.

The common side effects of Reclast are tiredness, headache, eye pain, nausea, and fever.

Stop using Reclast and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe joint pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as breathing difficulties, skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Signs of low calcium levels, such as numbness, muscle spasms, contractions, etc;
• Unusual pain in your thigh or hip

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Reclast, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Reclast is a solution for infusion. Your doctor will administer this medicine into your vein. You may receive this drug as a single dose or once every 1 to 2 years, depending on your condition. Drink at least two glasses of water within a few hours before your injection to prevent dehydration. Reclast is often part of a complete treatment program that may include diet changes and taking calcium and vitamin supplements. Brush and floss your teeth regularly while using this drug. Avoid smoking. Smoking can reduce your bone mineral density, making fractures more likely. Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol. Heavy drinking can increase your risk for side effects and also cause bone loss.

Before you start using Reclast, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are dehydrated;
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Have a dental surgery;
• Have hypocalcemia,
• Have malabsorption;
• Have severe kidney disease;
• Have thyroid problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not use Reclast if you are pregnant. Zoledronic acid may harm an unborn baby or cause congenital disabilities. You may need a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment. Zoledronic acid can remain in your body for weeks or years after your last dose. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while using this medicine. Talk with your doctor about the need to prevent pregnancy after you stop using Reclast. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is unknown if Zoledronic Acid passes into breast milk. Nevertheless, it is advisable not to breastfeed while using the drug. Do not give this medicine to children without talking to your doctor. There may be a drug interaction between Reclast and other drugs such as Advil, prolia, ibuprofen, etc.
