It is also used to control nausea and vomiting, relieve prolonged hiccups, relieve restlessness anxiety before surgery, and help treat tetanus. The active ingredient in Thorazine is Chlorpromazine. Chlorpromazine belongs to a class of drugs known as antipsychotics (Phenothiazines). It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Thorazine are drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, dry mouth, blurred vision, tiredness, nausea, constipation, weight gain, or trouble sleeping.

Stop using Thorazine and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Erectile dysfunction or priapism;
• Galactorrhea;
• Irregular menses or amenorrhea;
• Severe diarrhea that doesn't respond to antibiotics;
• Severe body itching;
• Unintended weight gain;
• Unprovoked seizure

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Chlorpromazine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or other phenothiazine drugs (such as perphenazine thioridazine) or if you have any other allergies. Chlorpromazine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. Thorazine is a tablet, and it should be taken orally with a cup of water. Chlorpromazine is usually taken two to four times a day. The treatment dosage depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Follow your prescription label carefully. When Chlorpromazine is used to control nausea and vomiting, it is usually taken every 4-6 hours as needed. If you are taking Chlorpromazine to treat schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder, Chlorpromazine may control your symptoms but will not cure your condition. When Chlorpromazine is used to relieve hiccups, it is usually taken 3-4 times a day for up to 3 days or until the hiccups stop. If the hiccups do not stop after 3 days of treatment, a different medication should be used. If you are taking Chlorpromazine regularly, take it at around the exact times every day. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes. Patients with diabetes are advised to check their blood glucose levels regularly, as Chlorpromazine can affect the sugar levels in your blood. Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes while using the Thorazine tablet. Do not stop this medication without speaking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking Chlorpromazine, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, and shakiness.

Before you start using Thorazine, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Breathing problems (such as severe asthma, emphysema, lung infections);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Glaucoma;
• Heart problems (such as angina, heart attack, fast/irregular heartbeat, long QT syndrome);
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Low blood pressure;
• Seizure

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Thorazine can harm the unborn baby. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor right away the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. Babies born to mothers who have used this drug during the last trimester may develop symptoms such as muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, feeding/breathing difficulties, or constant crying. Discuss with your doctor if you noticed similar symptoms in your baby. It would be best to know that Thorazine passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between Thorazine and other drugs such as sotalol, quinidine, pimozide, procainamide, ibutilide, and indapamide. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.
