Velphoro (Sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is a prescription medication used to control phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. This medication helps prevent hypocalcemia caused by elevated phosphorus. Sucroferric oxyhydroxide belongs to the class of medications called phosphate binders. It works by binding to phosphate in your diet. The phosphate then comes out of your body in your stool. Decreasing blood phosphate levels helps to keep your bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body, and may decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels.
