Usage

Yasmin is used prevent pregnancy. The active ingredients are Drospirenone and Ethinyl Estradiol. Estradiol is a female sex hormone found naturally in the body. Yasmin works in various ways to prevent pregnancy. It changes the lining of the womb to prevent an egg from attaching, thickens the mucus in the cervix and prevents the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation). Yasmin may also be used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) or moderate acne if you have chosen to use birth control pills as your method of pregnancy prevention. Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder have symptoms such as lack of energy, lack of sleep and changes in appetite. Yasmin may also make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, and decrease your risk of ovarian cysts.

Side Effects

The common side effects of Yasmin include bloating, breast tenderness, headache, nausea, swelling ankles or feet, vomiting and weight changes.

Many people using this medication do not have any serious side effects. Check with your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Dark urine;
• Lumps in the breast;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Symptoms of a high potassium blood level;
• Unusual changes in vaginal bleeding;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start using Yasmin, tell your doctor if you have one of the following medical conditions:
• A history of depression, irregular menstrual cycles, or history of breast or uterine cancer;
• A history of jaundice caused by birth control pills;
• A history of stroke, blood clot, or circulation problems of diabetes;
• Adrenal gland disorder;
• Any type of breast, uterine, or hormone-dependent cancer;
• Gallbladder disease; diabetes;
• High blood pressure or heart disease;
• High cholesterol or if you are overweight; liver cancer;
• Kidney or liver disease;
• Seizures or epilepsy;
• Uncontrolled high blood pressure, migraine headaches, or a heart valve disorder;
• Unusual vaginal bleeding

Yasmin will not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia. Yasmin is in pregnancy category X (studies have demonstrated fetal abnormalities). Yasmin can cause birth defects. Do not use Yasmin if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment. The hormones in this medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Yasmin may also slow breast milk production. Do not use if you are breast-feeding a baby. Drospirenone may raise potassium levels in your blood. Other medical conditions can also affect potassium levels, including liver disease, kidney disease, and adrenal gland disorders. Before using Yasmin, tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions. Yasmin should not be used in children who have not yet had their first menstrual period. There may be a drug interaction between yasmin and medications such as anastrazole, tamoxifen, tranexamic acid, ritonavir, etc.
