Usage

Abilify is a drug that is given for the treatment of symptoms of various psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression), Tourette's syndrome, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. It is also prescribed in combination with other drugs for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It contains Ariprprazole which is an antipsychotic drug that works by interfering with the chemicals in the brain. In some cases, Abilify may be prescribed for children with autism over the age of 6 to treat the symptoms such as mood swings, aggression, irritability and self-harm/ injury. Imbalances in brain chemicals are thought to cause seizures. Abilify can decrease hallucinations and improve concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. This medication can also treat severe mood swings and decrease how often mood swings occur.

Side Effects

Stop using Abilify and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effects such as fainting, interrupted breathing during sleep, mental or mood changes, muscle spasm, mask-like facial expression, restlessness, tremor, trouble swallowing, trouble controlling urges. Less serious side effects may include:
• Blurred vision;
• Constipation;
• Dizziness;
• Drowsiness;
• Excess saliva or drooling;
• Headache;
• Lightheadedness;
• Nausea;
• Tiredness;
• Trouble sleeping;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Abilify if you are allergic to Aripiprazole. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially of cerebrovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, heart problems, dementia, seizures and sleep apnea. Abilify is not for use in psychotic conditions that are related to dementia. Talk to your doctor if you have any signs of high blood sugar such as increased thirst or urination, excessive hunger, or weakness. You should inform your doctor if you are planning to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding. Aripiprazole may cause drowsiness, trouble with thinking or trouble with controlling movements, which may lead to falls, fractures or other injuries. You should not drive or do anything else that requires you to be alert unless you know how this medication affects you. There may be an interaction between Aripiprazole and other medications. There may be a drug interaction between Abilify and metoclopramide. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking other products that cause drowsiness such as codeine, hydrocodone, alcohol, marijuana, alprazolam, lorazepam, zolpiderrm, cyclobenzaprine, cetirizine and diphenhydramine.
