Acidophilus (Lactobacillus Acidophilus) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat diarrhea in children with rotavirus. The drug has also been used in alternative medicine to prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics, travel, chemotherapy, or hospitalization. Acidophilus is also possibly effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome, bacterial vaginal infection, colic in babies, lung infections in children, skin problems in children who are allergic to milk, and other conditions. Other uses of Acidophilus include treating lactose intolerance, Crohn's disease, overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, or vaginal yeast infections caused by antibiotics. The active ingredient in Acidophilus is Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Lactobacillus Acidophilus belongs to a class of drugs called probiotics.
