Viokace at CanadaPharmacyOnline.com

The manufacturer of brand-name Viokace (pancreatic enzymes: lipase, protease, amylase) is Accelera Pharma. It is available in several countries worldwide, including Canada.

Generic pancreatic enzymes (lipase, protease, amylase) are currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).

Dosage:

Viokace is available in the following oral strengths (lipase/protease/amylase, in USP units):
• 10,440 USP units lipase / 57,100 USP units protease / 56,400 USP units amylase.
• 20,880 USP units lipase / 112,500 USP units protease / 113,400 USP units amylase.

Viokace tablets are taken before or with each meal and snack. Your doctor will determine the right strength and number of tablets based on your body weight, the fat content of your diet, and the severity of your condition.

Usage:

Viokace is used to treat pancreatic insufficiency caused by cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or other pancreatic disease that requires pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy in adults. It is intended to replace enzymes when the pancreas has stopped producing enough of them, or is producing them abnormally, to digest fats, proteins, and sugars properly. A common symptom of pancreatic insufficiency is the presence of excess fat in the stool.

Mechanism of Action
Viokace contains an enzyme mixture of lipase, amylase, and protease derived from the pancreatic glands of pigs. Once active in the small intestine, these enzymes break down dietary fats, proteins, and starches into forms the body can absorb, mimicking the digestive enzymes a healthy pancreas would normally supply. Unlike some other pancreatic enzyme products, Viokace tablets are not enteric-coated, so they must be used together with a medication that reduces stomach acid, such as a proton pump inhibitor, to protect the enzymes as they pass through the stomach.

Take Viokace exactly as your doctor prescribes, according to the product monograph. Swallow the tablets whole with sufficient fluid. Do not crush or chew them, as Viokace is only approved for use as whole tablets. Take the medicine alongside a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole to prevent stomach acid from destroying the enzymes before they reach the small intestine.

The information below summarizes some, but not all, potential side effects, risks, and interactions. Before starting Viokace, it is essential to discuss all possible side effects, risks, and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects:

The information below outlines potential side effects of Viokace (pancreatic enzymes). It is not an exhaustive list, and individual reactions can vary.

Common side effects: These are common side effects of Viokace; other side effects are possible. Contact your doctor promptly if any side effects are persistent, worsening, or concerning, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms.
• Abdominal pain and flatulence
• Anal itching
• Headache
• Swelling in the limbs

Serious Side Effects: Seek immediate medical attention or call emergency services if you experience any of the following symptoms:
• Fibrosing Colonopathy: New or worsening abdominal pain, bloating, or a change in bowel habits, a rare bowel-narrowing condition seen mainly in patients with cystic fibrosis on high enzyme doses.
• Severe Allergic Reaction: Difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Contraindications:

The following is not an exhaustive list of contraindications. Before starting Viokace, it is crucial to discuss all your medical conditions, past and present, and all medications you are taking with your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not take Viokace if:
• Acute Pancreatitis or an Acute Flare-Up of Chronic Pancreatitis.
• Allergies: You have a known hypersensitivity to porcine (pork) protein, pancreatic enzymes, or any of the tablet's ingredients.

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, past and present, before starting Viokace. This is crucial as certain conditions affect the drug's safety.
• A History of Bowel Obstruction or Fibrosing Colonopathy (Bowel Scarring).
• Gout or High Uric Acid Levels.

Drug Interactions:

Before taking Viokace, discuss all potential risks and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist. For complete, up-to-date information, please refer to the product monograph at https://pdf.hres.ca/dpd_pm/00030787.PDF.

Provide your doctor with a complete list of all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, herbal supplements, recreational drugs, and any significant dietary changes, as these may interact with Viokace. Because Viokace is intended to be used together with a proton pump inhibitor, tell your doctor about any other medications you take so they can watch for any changes in how well those medications are absorbed.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

It is not known whether Viokace can harm an unborn baby, so tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is also unknown whether Viokace passes into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before starting this medication.

Use in Children:

The safety and effectiveness of Viokace in children have not been established, so its use in pediatric patients should only be considered under close medical supervision. Enteric-coated formulations are preferred in pediatric care to avoid severe gastric breakdown and reduced nutrient absorption.

Why is Viokace more affordable in Canada than in the United States?

Prescription drug prices, including Viokace, are generally lower in Canada than in the U.S. due to a combination of factors, primarily government price regulations, differing market dynamics, and other economic considerations.
