Colazal (Balsalazide) is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. The active substance in Colazal is Balsalazide. Balsalazide belongs to the group of drugs called 5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivatives. It works by reducing bowel inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain in the lining of the intestines.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Colazal are headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, sore throat, trouble sleeping, or loss of appetite.

Stop using Colazal and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bleeding through the anus or passage of blood stained stool (hematochezia or melaena);
• Painful urination;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Worsening of your condition

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking balsalazide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other aminosalicylates including mesalamine, olsalazine, salicylates (such as aspirin, salsalate) and sulfasalazine. Colazal comes as a tablet, and it should be taken orally with a cup of water. Drink plenty of water during treatment with Colazal unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Follow your prescription label carefully. If taken as prescribed, the effect of Colazal may become evident within two to four weeks of usage. This will help prevent kidney stones. Colazal contains sodium. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are on a salt-restricted diet or if you have a condition that could be worsened by an increase in salt intake (such as heart failure). Balsalazide is usually taken for 8 weeks, but it may be taken for up to 12 weeks. Continue to take balsalazide even if you feel well. Do not stop taking balsalazide without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Colazal, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Heart diseases such as heart failure or pericarditis;
• Intestinal disorders such as pyloric stenosis;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether balsalazide will harm an unborn baby. However, having active ulcerative colitis during pregnancy may cause premature delivery or low birth weight. The benefit of treating ulcerative colitis may outweigh any risks to the baby. If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor if you notice diarrhea in the nursing baby. There may be a drug interaction between Colazal and other drugs such as dichlorphenamide, fenoprofen, hydrochlorothiazide, naproxen, oxaprozin, etc. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
