Firmagon Information

Drug name: Firmagon
Generic name: Degarelix
Use: Prostate Cancer

Firmagon is a drug which is prescribed to assist in the treatment of advanced hormone dependent prostate cancer, which is cancer of the male prostate glands. The active ingredient is called Degarelix. It is a man-made version of a protein which works to reduce testosterone. It belongs to the group of drugs called GnRH receptor antagonists. In prostate cancer, the tumor needs testosterone in order to continue growing. If the amount of testosterone is reduced, the tumor cannot grow, or will grow at a slower speed. It is injected into the body in the lower abdomen.

Firmagon Side Effects

The possible Firmagon side effects include:
• Back pain, joint pain;
• Chills, hot flashes;
• Constipation;
• Headaches, fatigue;
• Impotence, reduced sex drive, difficulty having an orgasm;
• Pain, swelling or redness where the injection was given;
• Weight gain.

More serious side effects may include:
• Dizziness, feeling faint, changes in heartbeat;
• High blood pressure;
• Pain or burning when urinating;
• Shortness of breath;
• Swelling in the hands or feet.

Firmagon Safety in Pregnancy and Children

• Electrolyte imbalance;
• Heart disease or a heart rhythm disorder;
• History of Long QT Syndrome;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease.

Firmagon has not been given a pregnancy rating as the drug is not for use in women, however the drug can cause birth defects in women who have been exposed to the drugs during pregnancy. Women should not take or even handle the drug if pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. Firmagon is safe for us in adult men over 18 years only. It is not for use in children under 18 years.
