Heparin Information

Heparin Details (Brand and Generic)

Canadapharmacyonline.com offers the brand Heparin from Canada, which is manufactured by Leo. The generic Heparin Sodium is also available from Canada by a different manufacturer. Our customers may also order Coumadin and other Anticoagulant medications. For more information, please call Customer Service toll-free at 1866.920.3784.

Dosage

The brand Heparin is available in the strength of 100 IU/ml and 1000 IU/ml vials. The generic Heparin Sodium is also available in the strength of 1000 IU/ml and 10,000 IU/ml.

Usage

Heparin (Heparin Sodium) is a prescription medication used to treat and prevent blood clots caused by certain medical conditions or procedures. The drug is also used before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots. The active ingredient in Heparin is Heparin Sodium. Heparin Sodium belongs to the class of medication called anticoagulants. It works by accelerating the rate of neutralization of antithrombin, preventing blood from clotting fast.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Heparin are uncontrolled bleeding, unusual bruising, and abnormal liver function tests.

Stop using Heparin and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Signs of a blood clot, such as sudden numbness, vision problems, swelling in an arm or leg;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat;
• Skin changes at the injection site

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Heparin Sodium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Heparin is an injection that should be administered under the skin or as an infusion into a vein. Your doctor will administer the drug or teach you how to administer it. Prepare the injection only when you are ready to give it. Heparin increases your risk of bleeding, which can be severe or life-threatening. You will need frequent tests to measure your blood clotting time. Use a needle and syringe only once. Do not stop using the injection until your doctor tells you to. Do not use heparin injection to flush (clean out) an intravenous (IV) catheter.

Before you start using Heparin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are on your menstrual period;
• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have bacterial endocarditis;
• Have ever had heparin-induced thrombocytopenia;
• Have high blood pressure;
• Have intestinal disorder;
• Have liver disease;
• Have uncontrolled bleeding

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Heparin will harm an unborn baby. Heparin Sodium may pass into breast milk in trace amounts. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Heparin Sodium and other drugs such as warfarin, tetracycline, nicotine, ibuprofen, dipyridamole, and digoxin.
