Product Details

Ibrance (Palbociclib) is a cancer medication that interferes with the spread of cancer cells in the body. It’s usually prescribed to treat people with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It can be given with letrozole for postmenopausal women, and for others, it might be given with fulvestrant.

Common side effects may include infections, easy bruising or bleeding, feeling weak or tired, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, mouth sores, abnormal liver function tests, dry skin, rash, altered sense of taste, nosebleed, thinning hair or hair loss. The serious side effects may include:

• Blisters or ulcers in the mouth, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing
• Low blood cell counts
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Signs of a blood clot in the lung
• Signs of inflammation in the lungs

You should not use Ibrance if you are allergic to Palbociclib. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication can cause harm to an unborn infant or cause birth defects if the mother or father is using this medication. It may affect fertility in men. You should not use Ibrance if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant (either parent), or nursing.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. Ibrance is a 28-day treatment cycle. Your doctor will determine how long to treat you with it. Take the medication with food and at the same time of day every day. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, break, or open it. Do not use if it has been broken or damaged. If you vomit after taking Ibrance, wait until the next day to take your next dose. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

There may be an interaction between Ibrance and other medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Ibrance. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Kidney disease
• Liver disease

Questions and Answers

1. Can taking Ibrance as a man affect my partner’s pregnancy?
Answer: Yes. This medication can cause harm or birth defects whether the mother or father are on this medication. If you’re a man, be sure to use effective birth control and be sure your partner is aware of the issues this medication can cause. Continue using birth control for 3 months after your final dose of Ibrance before trying to get pregnant.

2. Can I eat grapefruit while on Ibrance?
Answer: No, you will want to avoid eating grapefruit while on this medication. Grapefruit and grapefruit products can interact with Ibrance and lead to unwanted side effects.

3. Why do I need to have exams more frequently now that I’m on Ibrance?
Answer: Because it affects your immune system, this medication makes it easier for you to get infections—including serious or even fatal ones. Your doctor will want to be checking on you often to make sure you are healthy and there is no sign of infection in your body.
