Ibsrela at CanadaPharmacyOnline

Ibsrela (tenapanor), manufactured by Knight Pharmaceuticals, is available in Canada.

A generic version of tenapanor is currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).

Dosage:

Ibsrela is available in 50 mg oral tablets.

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your needs and medical conditions.

Usage:

Tenapanor is a prescription medication used in adults to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). It helps to relieve constipation and abdominal pain associated with IBS-C.

Mechanism of Action:
Ibsrela (tenapanor) is a minimally absorbed guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist that acts locally in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Activation of GC-C by tenapanor increases the concentration of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) intracellularly. Increased cGMP stimulates the secretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen, leading to an increase in intestinal fluid, which accelerates intestinal transit and promotes more frequent bowel movements. In animal models, tenapanor has also been shown to decrease visceral hypersensitivity, which may contribute to the reduction of abdominal pain in IBS-C.

Take Ibsrela exactly as your doctor prescribes, following the instructions on the Patient Welcome Brochure | Ibsrela provided by your pharmacy or the official prescribing information. Take it twice daily, immediately before meals. Swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them.

The information below summarizes some, but not all, potential side effects, risks, and interactions. Before taking Ibsrela, it is essential to discuss all possible side effects, risks, and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects:

The information below is a partial list of side effects; individual reactions can vary. Before starting Ibsrela, it is crucial to discuss potential side effects and risks with your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects – These are examples of some common side effects of Ibsrela, but others are possible. Contact your doctor promptly if any side effects are persistent, worsening, or concerning, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms.
• Abdominal distension (bloating)
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Flatulence (gas)
• Nausea
• Unusual stomach noises

Serious or rare side effects – Stop taking Ibsrela and seek immediate medical attention right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:
• Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing
• Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), especially in patients with kidney problems.
• Severe diarrhea (watery, loose stools occurring more often than usual)
• Signs of dehydration (such as decreased urination, dry mouth, lightheadedness)

Contraindications:

This is not an exhaustive list of contraindications. It is crucial to discuss all your medical conditions, past and present, and all medications you are taking with your doctor or pharmacist before starting Ibsrela.

Ibsrela should not be used if:
• You are under 6 years of age due to the risk of serious dehydration.
• You have known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, past and present, before starting Ibsrela. This is crucial because certain conditions can affect whether Ibsrela is right for you. These conditions may include, but are not limited to:
• Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) - Ibsrela is specifically for IBS-C.
• Frequent episodes of diarrhea.
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
• Kidney problems.

Do not stop this medication unless directed by your doctor.

Dizziness and Drowsiness:
Dizziness has been reported as a common side effect of Ibsrela. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you understand how it affects you.

Drug Interactions:

Before taking Ibsrela, it is essential to discuss all potential risks and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist. For complete and up-to-date information, refer to the official Ibsrela website: https://www.ibsrela.com/

Provide your doctor with a complete list of all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Specific drug interactions with Ibsrela have not been extensively studied. However, it is important to inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, especially those that affect bowel function, as concomitant use of certain laxatives could exacerbate the risk of diarrhea.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

It is not known if Ibsrela can harm an unborn baby. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

It is not known if Ibsrela passes into breast milk. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.

Use in Children:

The safety and effectiveness of Ibsrela have not been established in patients 6 to 18 years of age or younger. Therefore, Ibsrela is generally not recommended in children under 18 due to the lack of sufficient data and potential risks observed in nonclinical studies (e.g., deaths in young rats).

Frequently Asked Questions about Ibsrela at Canada Pharmacy Online:

Why is Ibsrela more affordable in Canada than in the United States?

Prescription drug prices, including Ibsrela, are generally lower in Canada than in the US due to a combination of factors, primarily government price regulations, differing market dynamics, and other economic considerations. In Canada, provincial and federal governments negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, which often results in lower costs compared to the US, where market forces play a more significant role. For more information, see the FAQs on Prescription Drug Importation from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF): https://www.kff.org/health-costs/issue-brief/faqs-on-prescription-drug-importation/

Why is Ibsrela not readily available in Canada?

Ibsrela (tenapanor) is primarily approved and marketed in the United States. Health Canada does not approve it. Availability in Canada would depend on regulatory approval from Health Canada and the manufacturer's decision to market it in the country. You would need to check with Canadian pharmacies or Health Canada's Drug Product Database for the most current information on its availability in Canada.

Can I take Ibsrela with food?

Ibsrela should be taken twice daily, immediately before breakfast (or the first meal of the day) and immediately before dinner.

Can I crush or chew Ibsrela tablets?

Ibsrela tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

Will Ibsrela cure my IBS-C?

Ibsrela is used to treat the symptoms of IBS-C, such as constipation and abdominal pain. It is not a cure for IBS-C, and long-term management may be necessary.

How quickly does Ibsrela start working?

Some patients may experience an improvement in bowel symptoms within the first week of treatment, but it can vary.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ibsrela?

If you miss a dose of Ibsrela, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.
