Product Details

Leucovorin Calcium (Calcium Folinate) is a form of folic acid and is used to reduce the side effects of large doses or accidental overdose of medications that reduce the effects of folic acid in the body. These medications include methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim, and more. Folic acid helps the body produce new cells and prevent DNA changes that could lead to cancer.

Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting, or tiredness. The serious side effects may include:

• Convulsions
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Difficulty breathing
o Hives
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Wheezing

You should not use Leucovorin Calcium if you are allergic to Calcium Folinate, if you have pernicious anemia, or other types of anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. It isn’t known if leucovorin could harm an unborn or nursing infant. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing to discuss the risks.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. When treating an accidental overdose, this medication should be used as soon as possible for best effect. It can also be given with other medications to help the kidneys remove medications such as methotrexate. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, or light.

There may be an interaction between Leucovorin Calcium and other medications including fluorouracil, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, or anti-seizure medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Leucovorin Calcium. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Breathing problems
• If you’re dehydrated
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
