Naphcon A (Naphazoline HCL/Pheniramine Maleate) is an over-the-counter ocular medication used for temporary relief of minor eye redness, ocular puffiness, or itching, continuous lacrimation (tearing), ocular irritation, and congestion that usually occur with allergies. The active ingredients in Naphcon A are Naphazoline HCL and Pheniramine Maleate. Naphazoline HCL is an alpha-adrenergic agonist (decongestant); it causes the narrowing of swollen blood vessels in the eyes to reduce eye redness. Pheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of itchy or watery eyes.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Naphcon A are a stinging or tingling sensation upon instillation, redness of the eyes, dilated pupils, and transient blurry vision.

• Difficulty in seeing clearly;

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of using these eye drops in pregnancy. It is not known whether naphazoline and pheniramine ophthalmic pass into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are breastfeeding a baby. There may be a drug interaction between Naphcon A and other drugs, such as steroid-containing eye drops.
