Usage

Naphcon A (Naphazoline HCL/Pheniramine Maleate) is an over-the-counter ocular medication used for temporary relief of minor eye redness, ocular puffiness, or itching, continuous lacrimation (tearing), ocular irritation, and congestion that usually occur with allergies. The active ingredients in Naphcon A are Naphazoline HCL and Pheniramine Maleate. Naphazoline HCL is an alpha-adrenergic agonist (decongestant); it causes the narrowing of swollen blood vessels in the eyes to reduce eye redness. Pheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of itchy or watery eyes.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Naphcon A are a stinging or tingling sensation upon instillation, redness of the eyes, dilated pupils, and transient blurry vision.

Stop using Naphcon A and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Difficulty in seeing clearly;
• Dizziness, excessive sweating, or confusion;
• Worsening of your sight;
• Worsening redness, itching, swelling in or around the eyes

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Naphcon A eye drops, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to them or have any other allergies. Do not use Naphcon A eye drops with contact lenses. Removing the contact lens before instilling the Naphcon A eye drops would be best. Read the leaflet that comes with it carefully. This medication temporarily relieves eye allergy symptoms; do not use it for longer than 5 days. One or two drops of Naphcon A eye drops should be instilled into the affected eyes every 4 hours or as required to relieve symptoms. Eye Drops are not to be used by children under 12 years of age unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation of the eye, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 3 days, discontinue use and speak to your ophthalmologist.

Before you start using Naphcon A, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Eye problems such as narrow-angle glaucoma;
• Eye infections or trauma;
• Hyperthyroidism or ocular manifestation of overactive thyroid;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown whether naphazoline and pheniramine ophthalmic will harm an unborn baby. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of using these eye drops in pregnancy. It is not known whether naphazoline and pheniramine ophthalmic pass into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are breastfeeding a baby. There may be a drug interaction between Naphcon A and other drugs, such as steroid-containing eye drops. Keep Naphcon A eye drops in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight.
