Nordette Information

Nordette Details (Brand and Generic) currently offers the generic Nordette (Levonorgestrel) also called Portia from Canada. The brand version is not available at the moment. Our customers may also buy Alesse and Nuvaring from Canada. For more information, please call Customer Service at 1866.920.3784.

Nordette is available in the strength of 21-day and 28-day tablets (each containing 0.03 mg Ethinyl estradiol and 0.15 mg levonorgestrel).

Nordette (Levonorgestrel) is a prescription birth control pill used to prevent pregnancy in women. The active ingredients in Nordette are Levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol. The combination belongs to the estrogen/progestins (oral contraceptives) drug class. Nordette works differently to prevent pregnancy if used correctly. It inhibits ovulation by stopping the maturation of eggs. It changes the cervical mucus consistency making it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg, and changes the uterus lining, making it less suitable for implantation.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Nordette are nausea, vomiting, headache, amenorrhea, bloating, weight gain, breast changes such as breast enlargement, tenderness, or discharge, chest pain, mood changes, and scanty vaginal bleeding.

Stop using Nordette and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Changes in mental status such as depression or low mood;
• Development of breast lump;
• Four weeks before and through two weeks after major surgery;
• Severe or uncontrolled vaginal bleeding;
• Severe abdominal pain or cramps;
• Unexplained loss of vision, proptosis, diplopia, papilledema, or retinal vascular lesions

Warnings and Interactions

This medication is an oral pill and should be swallowed with a cup of water. It would be best to pick a time of day that is easy for you to remember and take your pill simultaneously. It is vital and beneficial to continue taking this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. With certain brands of birth control pills, the amount of estrogen and progestin in each active tablet will vary at different times in the cycle. You must follow the package instructions to find the first tablet, start with the first tablet in the pack, and take them in the correct order. Do not skip any doses. Pregnancy is more likely if you miss pills, start a new pack late, or take your medicine at a different time than usual. If you are treating diabetes mellitus, this medication may affect your sugar level. Therefore, it would be best to maintain a regular sugar check and consult your doctor if you notice a rise in your sugar level. When you stop taking Nordette, you may notice that your period does not return spontaneously (post-therapeutic amenorrhea). In this case, you should contact your doctor. In addition, it may take a bit longer to get pregnant after stopping this medication. Consult your doctor for a proper medical assessment if you experience difficulty getting pregnant.

Before you start using Nordette, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Breast cancer or breast lump;
• Known or suspected pregnancy;
• Liver problems;
Thrombophlebitis, or thromboembolic disorders;
• Uncontrolled hypertension;
• Uterine (womb) cancer;
• Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Nordette (Levonorgestrel) should not be used in pregnancy because there is no reason to use contraceptive pills. You should discontinue this medication if pregnancy occurs. Contraceptive hormones or their metabolites are present in breast milk. This can reduce milk production in breastfeeding mothers. It is advisable to use other methods of contraception until nursing mothers stop breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Nordette and other drugs such as caffeine, diazepam, insulin, oral tranexamic acid, rifampin carbamazepine, and cephalosporins such as cefepime, cefuroxime, and ceftazidime.
