Normacol is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve constipation and manage bowel movements. Constipation often results from not eating enough fiber or not drinking enough fluid. This drug is also used to reduce the risk of intestine damage in people who have swallowed something sharp. Normacol is also used in people with rectal or anal surgery and those needing a high-fiber diet. People with colostomies or ileostomies also use this drug. Normacol is a fiber supplement. The active ingredient in Normacol is Sterculia. Sterculia is a natural dietary fiber from the karaya tree. It belongs to a class of medicines called laxatives. Sterculia increases the bulk of your stools, encouraging bowel movement through your digestive system.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Normacol are nausea, vomiting, bloody stool, bloating, and abdominal pain.

Stop using Normacol and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions which may include itchy skin, rash, or difficulty in breathing;
• Intestinal blockage;
• Worsening of your symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Normacol medication, inform your doctor if you have ulcerative colitis or other systemic illnesses. Laxatives containing frangula bark should not be taken by patients suffering from fecal impaction and other stomach complaints such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting unless advised by your doctor. Normacol granule contains sucrose. If you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking Normacol. Always take this medicine as described in this leaflet or as your doctor has told you. Swallow the granules with enough water or drinks. You should take enough water to prevent your esophagus from getting blocked. You should drink at least 2 liters of water daily while taking Normacol. Do not chew or crush the granules. You can also sprinkle Normacol on soft food like yogurt that doesn't require chewing. It is best to take this drug after a meal. Do not take Normacol just before bedtime or if you are lying down. It may take a few days to see the full benefit of this drug. If you do not feel your symptoms improving after four days, stop taking the medication and see your doctor.

Before you start using Normacol, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Fecal impaction;
• Intestinal ulcer, obstruction, or perforation;
• kidney problems;
• lactose or sucrose intolerance;
• Liver problems;
• Treating inflammatory bowel disease

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not take the Normacol solution if you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. There may be a drug interaction between Normacol and other drugs such as diuretics, quinidine, adrenocorticosteroids, and liquorice root. Keep the medication away from children's reach.
