Prolixin (Fluphenazine) is a prescription medication used to treat schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. The active substance in Prolixin is Fluphenazine. Fluphenazine belongs to the class of medication called Antipsychotics, 1st Generation (Phenothiazines). It works by affecting the balance of natural chemicals (dopamine) in the brain. It blocks postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain; depresses the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones and is believed to depress the reticular activating system thus affecting basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Prolixin are confusion, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, erectile dysfunction oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea.

Stop using Prolixin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Extrapyramidal symptoms such as dystonia, muscle weakness, parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia;
• Painful urination;
• Restlessness, anxiety and agitation;
• Severe constipation;
• Worsening eye sight

Warnings and Interactions

Before using fluphenazine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine, perphenazine); or if you have any other allergies. Prolixin is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water. Follow your doctor’s prescription carefully and use as directed. Your doctor may start you on a low dose Prolixin tablet depending on the nature of your condition. Do not smoke cigarette or drink alcohol while treating schizophrenia with Prolixin medication. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Before you start using Prolixin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:

• Brain damage due to brain tumor, encephalitis, stroke or cerebrovascular insufficiency;
• Eye problems such as cataract and glaucoma;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Severe depression;
• Seizure disorders

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Fluphenazine may cause problems in newborns following delivery if it is taken during your trimester. Speak with your doctor before taking any medication in pregnancy.
