Product Details

Protopic (Tacrolimus) is a prescription ointment that is used to treat severe skin conditions such as eczema. Protopic is a topical macrolide Immunosuppressant. It belongs to a class of drugs known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs). This medication works by weakening the skin’s defense system which decreases the allergic reaction and relieving the eczema.

Protopic Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects may include burning, itching, soreness and stinging in the area of treated skin. The serious side effects may include:
• Appearance of any skin infections;
• Back or joint and muscle pain;
• Chest pain;
• Diarrhea;
• Headache;
• Muscle pain;
• Stinging, burning or itching;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Upset stomach

You should not use Protopic if you are allergic to Tacrolimus or if you have any other allergies. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you more sensitive to the effects of alcohol. You should limit alcoholic beverages. Protopic ointment may make you more sensitive to the sun. You should limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. This medication may pass into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. There may be an interaction between Tacrolimus and other medications such as calcium channel blockers, cyclosporine, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole and sirolimus etc.
